Best-selling novelist Cassandra King Conroy and award-winning journalist Tony Bartelme will be the featured speakers at the 23rd Annual Southern Author Series sponsored in February by The Timrod Library in Summerville.
Cassandra King Conroy kicks off the Southern Authors Series on February 9. Her recently published memoir, Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy, is the author’s tribute to her late husband. Novelist Mary Alice Monroe describes the book as “breathtakingly tender and heartbreakingly true.” The memoir is the latest work by Ms. Conroy, author of five novels, including the NY Times best seller The Sunday Wife and The Same Sweet Girls. Ms. Conroy is a contributor to Southern Living and CoastalLiving magazines and is the honorary chair of the Pat Conroy Literary Center in Beaufort, SC.
On February 16, the Timrod will host Tony Bartelme, senior projects reporter for the Post and Courier. A three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Bartelme combines the investigative talents of a journalist with the compelling narrative skills of a story teller. His work has exposed government corruption and explored diverse issues ranging from changes in ocean plankton to the global shortage of doctors. His most recent work is A Surgeon in the Village, which chronicles the efforts of an American neurosurgeon to teach brain surgery in a remote Tanzanian village. The book has been lauded by Tom Brokaw as “lyrical, inspirational, and altogether rewarding.”
Presentations on both days begin at 2:00 pm at the Bethany United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 118 W. 3rd S. Street, Summerville. A “meet the author” Lowcountry reception will follow next door at the Timrod Library. Tickets for Timrod members are $20 ($30 for both events); non-members $25 ($40 for both events). Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Timrod Library, 217 Central Avenue. For more information, or to purchase tickets in advance, contact the Timrod at (843) 871-4600 or through Facebook.
