Text Box: The Cigar Factory Play Two Performance Readings Queen Street Theatre Friday, February 21, 7:30pm Saturday, February 22, 3:00pm Tickets $15 available online at Footlightplayers.net Charleston author, Michele Moore, has turned her award-winning novel, The Cigar Factory, into a two-act play.  She will bring this new play to the stage for two full performance readings Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22 at the historic Queen Street Theatre.The Cigar Factory tells the story of two working class Catholic women in Charleston from 1917 to 1946:  Meliah Amey Ravenel is African American, and Cassie McGonegal is Irish American. For a brief yet historic moment, they come together in The Cigar Factory at a time when society was determined to keep them apart.

 

The play is a celebration of the influence of the West African based Gullah-Geechee culture and language on the people of the South Carolina Lowcountry, regardless of race or class. Pat Conroy described Moore’s use of language as  “…an articulate testament to the integrity of her historical narrative.”
