“Coming to Monuments” Performance and Panel Discussion

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission and CCPL present a free performance of “Coming to Monuments.” Fueled by the music and poetry of Marcus Amaker, Charleston’s first poet laureate, and performed by Charleston based Dance Matters, “Coming to Monuments” employs a unique blend of dance and storytelling that questions how history will be shaped and by whom. The performance will be followed by a panel discussion with individuals who have made important contributions to the quest for civil rights, equality and social justice in the area. Featured panelists include Dr. Millicent Brown, one of the first black students to integrate Charleston’s public schools; Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, the first black woman to serve on the Mt. Pleasant Town Council; and poet Marcus Amaker. The panel will be moderated by local historian Damon Brown.
