The instant her phone rang, Reverend Sharon Risher sensed something was horribly wrong. Something had happened at Emanuel AME Church, the church of her youth in Charleston, and she knew her mother was likely at Bible study in the church. Even before she heard the news, her chaplain’s instinct told her the awful truth: her mother was dead, along with two cousins. What Risher couldn’t imagine was that they had been murdered by a white supremacist. Plunged into the depths of mourning, anger and shock, she could have wallowed in the pain. Instead, she chose the path of forgiveness and hope – eventually forgiving the convicted killer for his crime. “For Such a Time as This: Hope and Forgiveness after the Charleston Massacre” is Risher’s powerful memoir of faith, family and loss. Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event.

After the murder of his wife during the Charleston church shooting, Anthony Thompson chose to publicly and privately forgive the shooter. Though many questioned his reasoning, the community response radically changed as people witnessed his act of forgiveness. Thompson’s book, “Called to Forgive: The Charleston Church Shooting, a Victim’s Husband, and the Path to Healing and Peace” is a poignant account that shows how forgiveness can affect our lives, communities, and even our nation. As a part of Cry Joy Park—Gardens of Dark and Light, Jennifer Wen Ma has conceived of a series of Luncheons in the Garden in which the public will be invited to be a part of conversations dealing with themes of the exhibition.
Bring a bag lunch and break bread with other members of the community in the Halsey Institute galleries. Each Luncheon in the Garden will also feature a collaborative performance by musician, dancer, or poet relating to the theme. For this Luncheon, the artist will be discussing land issues facing the Lowcountry.
Without land, we would not have trees, gardens, or vegetation of any sort, the basis of a paradise. Everything under the sun has a right to live and to lay its head on the earth to rest, be it an ant, elephant or human. But the politics of land has put the world in a critical state; Charleston’s local issues are reflections of the global condition. Habitat loss, homelessness, and gentrification have made land ownership/stewardship not just a human rights problem, but also an animal rights and environmental crisis.
Free and open to the public Artist will be present Bring your own bag lunch

What restitution and codes of conduct would be necessary to allow them back? How do we bring the formerly incarcerated back into the fold of society, so they can become active and productive members of this paradise again?

We are bringing you fireworks! Headliner Coco Fresh is going to light up this stage. You don’t want to miss this hilarious little fireball. Guaranteed laughter. Joining Coco is New York’s Clint Nohr, a former Charleston resident who’s comedy career led him to the big Apple and Myrtle Beach’s Scott Schacher rounds out the lineup.
Coco Fresh is a New Jack Female on the comedy scene from Charlotte, NC. A Comedy Zone Comedy School Alumni, Former radio personality of Club Vibrations Saturday Night Live Broadcast on Charlotte’s Old School 105.3FM, and entertainment reporter of The Hollywood Scoreboard ESPN980 The Morning Man Cave, Currently she is appearing on season 2 of TruTVs Laff Mobbs Laff Tracks, touring around the country, and The Charlotte Comedy Zones official host of Fight Night. This little lady’s stories of her childhood nightmares to strip club memoirs will tickle your funny bone enough to have completed an ab exercise. She is no stranger to television and has appeared as a dancer on BET’s Born to Dance, 106 and Park, MTV’s The Wade Robson Project, and CMT’s The Ultimate Coyote. She is also a former dancer for the WNBA and NBA.
Using his young appearance to his advantage, Clint Nohr immediately establishes a rapport with the audience. He’s charming and adorable and the funny thing is, he ACTUALLY believes this. Truth is, he combines sharp writing with a likable approach to any topic (nothing off limits). It’s a mixed bag of observational humor coming from a warped and twisted, yet somehow always relatable point of view. His conversational delivery comes across almost over-confident and self deprecating all at once, giving him the ability to connect with ANY crowd.
Your host, Keith Dee, is a regular feature for the Comedy Zone World Wide, and recently featured for Jamie Kennedy, and the Legendary Emo Phillips. He’s been a performer in the Charleston Comedy Festival and The North Carolina Comedy Festival.
