Henry's on the Market
54 N Market St, Charleston, SC 29401

Nightly Spirits, the nation’s largest haunted pub tour company providing tours in 14 cities across the nation, is bringing its spooky ghost tales and lively tour guides to Charleston, South Carolina with tours kicking off Friday, June 28th. Established in 2012, Nightly Spirits boasts year-round, intimate tours of just 15 to 20 guests that provide a hair-raising history through Charleston’s apparitional annals.

Priced at just $25 for a two-and-a-half-hour tour that includes some pub time to drown the darkness, locals and tourists ages 21-and-up will gain access to exclusive off-limits areas throughout Charleston’s most “spectered” saloons.  Enthusiastic and costumed tour guides will cast a spooky spell throughout the evening with their knowledgeable, theatric and even comedic tales of Charleston’s other worldly adventures.

Starting at 8:30 p.m., tour guests will meet their guide at Henry’s on the Market to kick off their night of ghoulish adventure. The tour will continue on to the equally haunted Tommy Condon’s where guests will learn why Charleston got its famous nickname, with Blind Tiger rounding out the night with more libations and haunted happenings.

HIACON will bring 72 exhibitors and more than 40 speakers and educators who represent farm business, sustainability, herbal and dietary supplements as well as hemp companies, business services, and brands showcasing product innovation. Up to 72 vendors with products ranging from hemp farm supplies to retail products will be on-site, as well as industry leaders and educators hosting Hemp Industry Talks. This annual trade association event provides for education, conversation, exhibition and networking like no other hemp event in the country. Attendees have the opportunity to learn from experts and each other. Orders for products and services are often negotiated right in the exhibit hall or the lounge while the event is live. This year’s HIACON will be monumental as the longest-standing hemp conference in its 26th year. It will be free and open to the public on Sunday, November 3, 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Only registered attendees will have full access for the entire weekend. To learn more, or to register for the entire event visit www.hiacon.org.

____________________________
“On America Street in Charleston’s East Side neighborhood, Joe is the owner of a small corner store, the heart of an old but slowly disappearing black community. Almost half of all African Americans trace their origins back to Charleston, a city that is still haunted by its slave-owning past. In the face of the multiple challenges that African Americans face, Joe is determined to stay hopeful and to resist losing his neighborhood to the rising forces of gentrification.

My film captures three months during 2015 of Joe’s daily struggles set against the backdrop of racist violence in the city, from the killing of Walter Scott by a police officer to the Emanuel Church massacre by a young white supremacist.

I was inspired to make the film when I moved to South Carolina in 2013. I am a West African immigrant and I was, and still am, trying to navigate a country that feels, in many ways, increasingly unwelcoming towards black bodies.

Through the character of Joe, my film examines how African Americans feel marginalized in a once predominantly black city like Charleston and how white supremacy is becoming more pervasive and insidious in America.”

Participate in a handson indigo dye class, and dye your own head wrap or handkerchief as you learn about the significant role the ancestors of today’s Gullah Geechee people played in the successful, commercial cultivation of indigo in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida in the 1700s. You can also visit our Gullah Geechee demonstration garden behind the library to learn more about how the plant is grown. Indigo was first farmed here to diversify the rice economy. While indigo was grown here for export to England’s textile mills, the plant is indigenous to Africa and for centuries has been used there as a fabric dye. While your creation is drying, watch “Blue Alchemy: Stories of Indigo,” a documentary by Mary Lance on the history, culture and revival of the blue dye. It’s also about remarkable people around the globe who are using indigo in projects intended to improve life in their communities, preserve cultural integrity, and bring beauty to the world.

This lecture examines the research questions and findings at the heart of “Making Gullah: A History of Sapelo Islanders, Race and the American Imagination.” Focusing on the period-specific ideas about race, heredity and culture that shaped outsiders’ characterizations of Lowcountry blacks’ connection to their African progenitors, Melissa L. Cooper describes the historical progression of theories about Gullah folks’ Africanness. Ultimately, Cooper reflects on how “Making Gullah” unveils the complexity of an identity famous for its simplicity and timelessness.

Interested members of the community are invited to join us in a safe space to learn how to help and heal. CCPL, in partnership with local advocates from the North Charleston Police Department and the non-profit women’s shelter, My Sister’s House, present an evening of discussion, dialogue and community support. A lecture by Ellen Levy

Ray Johnson and Andy Warhol were friends with much in common: both were pioneers of Pop Art and connoisseurs of fame, and they shared a special fascination with celebrity’s dark side. This talk by Ellen Levy, professor at Pratt Institute in New York City, traces the initially convergent but finally divergent paths of the two artists as they negotiated the worlds of stardom and superstardom, both in art and in life. Ellen Levy writes on the relations among the arts, especially poetry and visual art, particularly in mid-twentieth-century New York. She is currently working on a book about the career of artist Ray Johnson.

You know you need to write great fundraising letters. But how, exactly, do you do that?

Fundraising is an art and a science, and your appeal letter needs to reflect both. You need to understand what motivates donors, how to get them to give – and get them to give more.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to dye fabrics with indigo? It’s time to learn! Indigo was a wildly successful cash crop in Colonial South Carolina. Eliza Lucas Pinckney experimented with Indigofera plants for 4 years and perfected the difficult process: growing, harvesting, fermenting, aerating, and drying. Learn about this fascinating process and the work the enslaved people were forced to do to take indigo from flowering plant to expensive blue dye.

Join The Arctic Refuge Defense Campaign on November 18th from 6:30pm – 7.30pm at the Charleston County Main Library for a screening of ‘The Refuge,’ an intimate look at the decades-long struggle of the Gwich’in Nation to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil and gas drilling.

The Arctic Refuge Defense Campaign will speak about how their environmental efforts directly tie into standing with the Gwich’in Nation to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil and gas drilling and how Charlestonians can help with these efforts: no distance is too far when opposing oil and gas drilling in our wildernesses!

The screening will be followed by a panel featuring local environmental, community, and business actors. The panel members will speak to how drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will have serious negative biological, cultural, and climate impacts in both the rapidly-warming Arctic and globally.

The Arctic Refuge Defense Campaign will be facilitating a social media station where attendees can tag the oil and gas corporations who are going to purchase land in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to increase the groundswell of consumer pressure on these corporations.

Last, but certainly not least, if you can’t make it, please tell at least 5 friends!

The Charleston neighborhood known as Harleston Village traces its roots back to the late colonial era, when the Harleston family subdivided a verdant tract called “Coming’s Point” along the banks of the Ashley River. Join CCPL’s historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for a review of the neighborhood’s early landscape, its suburban genesis in 1770, and its connection to the adjacent public green space that became known as Charleston’s “Colonial Common.”

Sixty years ago, with just eight hundred dollars borrowed from a family co-op fund, Berry Gordy, Jr. launched his independent record company.

Motown Records not only made music but made history.

The music of Motown permeated a divide within our culture – unifying pop and soul, black and white, and old and young.

We invite you join us at Forte’s Jazz Lounge to celebrate the soulful music of Motown and honor Motown’s influence on our culture. This one-of-a-kind event will feature the live performances of the talented David Anthony and Paul Stone from Chattanooga in one of Charleston’s most eclectic venues on King Street. Special guests Zandrina Dunning and Stephen Washington will perform as well, and Charleton Singleton will serve as the event’s Honorary Chair.

Local craft beer and a selection of wine will be available for purchase. A complimentary drink ticket is included.

Thirty years ago, former camper, current volunteer and pediatric cancer survivor, Allan “Cabooty” Cabading, hosted a small house party to raise money for Camp Happy Days. Now, thirty years later, the organization has grown, the number of families we serve has grown (706 families), and the party has grown (more than 400 people attended last year’s gala)!
