    Mattress Firm Foster Kids Shoe Drive

    All 16 Mattress Firm stores in Charleston are hosting a shoe drive to benefit local foster youth and families. Now through Tuesday, Oct. 31, during normal store hours, Mattress Firm will accept new shoes and monetary contributions to help local foster children walk with confidence. At the end of the nine-week drive, all proceeds will be donated to Growing Home Southeast, Helping & Lending Outreach Support and the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program.

    Throughout the year, Mattress Firm Foster Kids, a program of the Ticket to Dream Foundation, hosts six donation drives at its Charleston-area stores to collect items and raise funds to help thousands of local foster children. Donations from each drive are distributed to partner organizations in the community.

    When I First Remember Who: Lady in White Productions presents When I First Remember What: Family-friendly night of entertainment Takes the audience on a journey with African slaves on their way to the Low Country Highlights how they survived, persevered and adapted in a foreign land, giving rise to a unique culture and identity, Gullah-Geechee, that is recognized and emulated today Why: Every Thursday we open the doors of Charleston third oldest structure ” Old Bethel United Methodist Church” . To educate tourists on the history and origins of the enslaved peoples of the Low Country and how their resilience and influence created the modern day African-American and Gullah-Geechee communities. We give visitors a chance to come in and sit, sing, see, and be apart of living history of the church and tell the story of the church and our lives as enslave and free people here in the Low Country. The mission of When I First Remember is to tell the story of the African slaves of the Low Country that gave birth to a unique culture and identity known as the Gullah-Geechee culture. Description: When I First Remember takes the viewer on a journey with the characters who are African slaves traveling to the Low Country on a slave ship. The audience will be transported with the actors and witness how they survived, adjusted and adapted to their new world, creating a new culture and identity that is recognized today…the Gullah-Geechee culture. (A portion of the proceeds from this production help to upkeep this National Monument ) Season June 1- October 5th every Thursday

    Regardless of race, religion, ethnic background, age or origin, if you have a desire to learn more about your ancestors, join the Berkeley County Library System and members from the local chapters of the DaughtersSons, and Children of the American Revolution for a genealogy event. Learn more about free family history research resources available from the Berkeley County Library System, DAR, and SAR. Our experts, BCLS’s Oral History and Digital Projects Librarian along with a representative from the LDS Church Family Search, will have computer workstations available for use and will introduce you to multiple genealogy resources that you can access from home or the library

    Drop by at any time to speak with a member or sign up online (or at the door) to secure a 15-minute time slot with a research expert. Computers will be available but attendees may also bring their own devices. If you have an active BCLS library card, please bring that as well to obtain access to the library’s ProQuest HeritageQuest® database.
