Donations To Goodwill Help Boost Local Community
1/3/2013 12:24:47 PM

Charleston, SC— Do you ever wonder what happens to your donations after you drop them off at Goodwill? You may have created a more organized closet or garage, but you’re doing much more than helping yourself—you’re also helping people in your community gain employment.

Mission revenues generated through the sale of donations at Goodwill stores located in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties continue to positively impact the lives of individuals in these communities.

Since the first of the year, Goodwill has provided 20,218 services to 15,831 people in the Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester communities. The services include direct assistance with job searches, resume preparation, GED preparation and Work Keys Training through the three area Job Link Centers. With Goodwill’s help, 222 people were placed into jobs.

Donors who choose to donate their gently used items to Goodwill can feel good knowing that over 90% of revenues generated from their donation funds job training and employment services for people in their community. Donations are also tax deductible.

“Goodwill’s donated goods program also supports people in need through our clothing voucher program,” said Robert Smith, CEO and President of Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina.  “This program provides clothing for those who have been negatively impacted by disasters such as fire as well as those in need of attire for job interviews.” In Beaufort and Colleton counties, Goodwill has distributed 6,423 clothing vouchers this year, valued at $224,805.

“Donations are key to the sustainability of Goodwill’s employment programs.”  With the community’s donations, we are able to help those in need find jobs and promote better lifestyles which in turn, strengthen our economy," said Smith.  “As long as we have the community’s continued support by donating and shopping in Goodwill retail stores, we are able to continue our mission of helping people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work.”
