GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR APPOINTS SISTRUNK TO MISSISSIPPI BOARD OF EDUCATION
(Jackson, Miss.) – Governor Haley Barbour has appointed David Sistrunk, of Kosciusko, to serve on the Mississippi State Board of Education. The Board, which is designed to manage and invest school funds and to formulate education policies, is made up of 9 members appointed by the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“I am confident that he will be a great asset to this Board,” Governor Barbour said. “Education continues to be a top priority for state government, and appointing well-qualified individuals like David is yet another way to help Mississippi develop a more efficient education system.”
Sistrunk has been Superintendent of the Kosciusko School District for the last 15 years and has extensive experience in the education field. Previously, he was the principal of Pontotoc High School and Lexora Public School in Mississippi, Superintendent of Violet Hill School in Arkansas, and instructor and trainer of the Program for Effective Teaching.
During Sistrunk’s tenure as Superintendent, the Kosciusko School District has achieved a ranking of three Level 5 schools and one Level 4 school while spending in the bottom third percentile of per-pupil expenditures. Under Sistrunk’s leadership, the district places in the top 20 percent in administrative cost efficiency in the state and has developed a strong career and technical education program.
“This is a great honor for me,” David Sistrunk said. “I have been involved with education for many years and will feel right at home serving on the Board of Education. I hope to contribute as much as possible to the improvement of education in our great State.”
Sistrunk earned his Bachelor of Science in social studies with special distinction from Mississippi State University, where he also received his Master of Education and Doctorate of Education. A former Captain in the United States Army, Sistrunk is a member of the Kosciusko Rotary Club. He is married to Marianna B. Sistrunk, who is a kindergarten teacher. Together, they have four children and five grandchildren.
The Mississippi Board of Education works with the Department of Education to regulate, improve, and oversee the State’s education system. The Board works to produce a functionally literate school population; to establish, raise, and maintain educational standards; to provide quality education for all school-age children in the state; and to encourage students, parents, teachers, administrators, and business leaders to work together for the establishment of specific goals for educational performance. The Board also establishes methods for monitoring continued performance in Mississippi schools and provides a state response when performance is inadequate.
