While Charleston’s Middleton Place draws visitors nearly year round, few ever enjoy the 6,000 acres of fox hunting and equestrian trails, which are rarely open to the public. But on October 26, “Running with the Hounds” will allow participants unique access to the grounds for a canicross, trail run, and walking event from 2PM to 6:30PM.
An event for the whole family, “Running with the Hounds” will offer four different 5K races, as well as plenty of activities for parents, kids, and pets. Those interested in hitting the trails can register for the canicross, a popular European sport where participants run with their dogs in a tandem harness; a timed trail run for dogs and their owners; an untimed fun run; or a trail walk for those with or without dogs. On the trails, guests will enjoy a rich landscape of lakes, forests, and fields, which are home to everything from wild turkeys to hawks to deer. Gates open at 2PM, and the first race will begin at 3PM.
Guests can also take advantage of the Huck Finn Village to enjoy family-oriented events including horse shoe bingo, kayaking, cane pole fishing, stone skipping, raft building, a kid’s steeple chase, a geocaching scavenger hunt, dog demonstrations, and a dog agility course. With music and popular Charleston food trucks Low Country Street Eats, Carolina Creole, Auto Banh, and Charleston Hot Dog on hand throughout the day, “Running with the Hounds” is a great opportunity to experience Middleton Place.
Individual registration prices range from $10 for non-runners looking to enjoy the day’s other activities to $30 for the 5K competitive canicross run. Guests can also purchase a 1, 2, or 3-mile trail walk family package for $45. To register for “Running with the Hounds,” visit www.runningwiththehounds.com or www.active.com.
All pet rescue groups are invited to host a booth at the event free of charge, and a portion of the day’s proceeds will benefit the Carolina Coon Hound Rescue.
