Governor Barbour Makes Appointments to State Board of Psychology

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointments of Thomas David Elkin, of Jackson, and Karen Ann Christoff, of Oxford, to the State Board of Psychology. Elkin will serve a five-year term ending June 30, 2009; Christoff will serve an unexpired term ending June 30, 2007. The Mississippi Board of Psychology is designed to regulate the practice of psychology in order to safeguard the Mississippi people against unauthorized, unqualified, and improper applications of psychology.

“These appointees are well-qualified for this board,” said Governor Barbour. “Both have extensive experience with applications of psychology, and I feel confident they will serve the people of Mississippi well.”

Thomas David Elkin works for the University Medical Center as an Associate Professor for the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and as a lecturer for the Department of Pediatrics. Elkin attended Vanderbilt University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history. He then attended graduate school at the Reformed Theological Seminary, receiving a Master of Divinity in Theology and at the University of Memphis, receiving his Doctor of Philosophy. Elkin is certified by the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He is a member of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy, the International Neuropsychological Society, the Mississippi Psychological Society, and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.

Karen Ann Christoff is the Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Mississippi. Christoff has been listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology since 1986, and is certified in Mississippi to conduct Civil Commitment Evaluations. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Rochester in New York, a Master’s degree in general/experimental psychology at the University of New York’s College of Arts and Science, and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology at West Virginia University. A member of the American Psychological Association, Christoff is also a member of the American and Mississippi Psychological Society, the Association for Behavior Analysis, and the Society for Research in Child Development. In addition, Christoff has served as the Chief Financial Officer for the Mississippi Psychological Association, Guest Reviewer of the International Journal of Intercultural Relations, and the Director of Clinical Training at the University of Mississippi.
