GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR RINGSTHE OPENING BELL AT THE NYSE
(Jackson, Miss.) -- Governor Haley Barbour and First Lady Marsha Barbour visited the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) today and rang The Opening Bell.
"The NYSE is home to six Mississippi companies with an aggregate market capitalization of approximately $4.2 billion. We are honored to have Governor Barbour ring this morning's Opening Bell," said John A. Thain, CEO of the NYSE.
The Opening Bell and The Closing Bell of the NYSE signify the start and finish of the NYSE's trading day, at 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
"I am honored to have been asked to take part in this time-honored tradition," said Governor Barbour. "The NYSE is in many ways the place where the world's economy lives. It is host not only to companies from around the globe, but from Mississippi as well. I hope my presence there was a reminder to corporate America to 'give Mississippi a ring' if they're looking for a place to locate."
U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Hal Sutton rang the The Closing Bell today in honor of next month's highly anticipated golf event. The Honorable Tom Ridge, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is scheduled to ring the bell on Wednesday, August 25.
The NYSE's mission is to add value to the capital-raising and asset-management process by providing the highest-quality and most cost-effective self-regulated marketplace for the trading of financial instruments, promote confidence in and understanding of that process, and serve as a forum for discussion of relevant national and international policy issues.
