GOVERNOR BARBOUR APPOINTED TO CHAIR NGA’S HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE (Jackson, Miss.) — During the National Governors Association (NGA) meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, Governor Haley Barbour was selected to serve as the 2005-2006 Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee. Last year, he served as Vice Chairman. “Unfortunately, there are over 45 million people lacking effective health insurance in the United States today and for many who do have insurance, the quality of their health care needs to be improved,” Governor Barbour said. “Our meeting in Des Moines allowed governors to discuss this important issue and map out potential solutions.” The Health and Human Services Committee has primary jurisdiction over issues relating to health care, human services, criminal justice, and homeland security. Among the key issues for the Health and Human Services Committee are Medicaid, State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and Welfare reforms. This year Governor Barbour made welcoming comments to the committee on such topics as reducing the rising costs of both private and public health insurance, improving the quality of health care in the country, and increasing coverage and access for uninsured Americans. Governor Barbour and Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm also serve as members of Medicaid Reform Working Group. These two governors along with the nine-member NGA Executive Committee comprise this group.
