GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR SIGNS MISSISSIPPI MILITARY FAMILY RELIEF FUND BILL INTO LAW

(Jackson, Miss.) – Governor Haley Barbour today signed Senate Bill 2005, which creates the Mississippi Military Family Relief Fund, alongside Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck, State Treasurer Tate Reeves, lawmakers, military leaders and their families. The relief fund, comprised of voluntary contributions from Mississippians, may assist military families suffering from unexpected financial emergencies. Under the bill, Mississippi resident individual income taxpayers may designate any portion of their tax refund for deposit into the relief fund.

“The men and women who are serving overseas are true patriots and Mississippi heroes,” said Governor Barbour. “Their dedicated service is sincerely appreciated by all, and I think it’s only appropriate that we, as a State, give something back to their families. Mississippi soldiers deserve having the relief of knowing that their families are being provided for back home.”

The Mississippi Military Family Relief Fund will be used to make grants to families that experience financial difficulties due to a family member from the Mississippi National Guard or Armed Forces Reserves being called to active duty.

"Mississippians are famous for their charity and now, thanks to the Mississippi Senate and their legislative colleagues, we have a chance to see that charity in action for our own brave soldiers and their families," said Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck.

The State’s Adjutant General, Major General Harold A. Cross, will establish eligibility requirements for the recipients and grant amounts given by the Mississippi Military Relief Fund.

“The Mississippi Military Relief Fund will provide much needed financial relief to our military families who have a deployed Soldier and are experiencing financial emergencies,” said Maj. Gen. Cross. “I’m proud to see Mississippians stepping up to the plate in support of our military families.”

To contribute, citizens can make their checks payable to the State Treasurer/Military Relief Fund, and mail to the State Treasurer’s Office, P.O. Box 138, Jackson, MS 39205-0138.
