The Colour of Music festival opened its 2016 series on Monday, October 17th at Library Society on King Street and then a series of performances which started at the Gaillard Center on October 19th. Under the leadership of Lee Pringle, the festival now entered its third year and exposed the Charleston community to classically trained musicians and vocalists from the local, regional and international music scene.

At the October 22nd performance of an Evening at Versailles at the Gaillard Center, students from Charleston Development Academy Public Charter School’s Singing Eagles sang as part of the program that featured and orchestra and choir members who are nationally and internationally renowned.

Linda Brown, who currently serves a choir director for the Singing Eagles, prepared the students for several weeks and then daily as the performance date approached. The students participated in three of the twenty-five movements, “Amors Vocat Unique”, “Tempset Eou Cundum” and “O Frotuna”.

“Having to sing in Latin was a challenge but the students, but as they became more excited to perform, they put in the work to perfect the songs,” stated Brown. Brown also stressed to the students the level of professionalism that would be required as they would be performing with musicians who have trained their entire lives to perfect their craft, and was glad to see the impression made when the students were in the midst of so many African-american singers and performers which she described as a poignant moment.

“It’s not for the praises of man but God’s getting the glory,” said Brown as she stressed this message to her students as they prepared for an outstanding performance on Saturday evening.
