The Charleston (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, in collaboration with Kanpe Haiti, has supported the “Buckets to Haiti Project” for two years by sending needed food, hygiene and inspirational items to individuals and families in need. The 2016 project took a different twist when the International Trends and Services Facet (ITS) combined Friendship Month with its usual outreach.

Shopping and filling the buckets became a unique opportunity for chapter members to shop together to reach the goal of filling 150 five gallon buckets. As a result of overwhelming support from the chapter, family members, churches and friends, Links reached their goal by preparing 155 five gallon buckets.

Contents of the buckets included: 510 pounds of rice (5,273 servings), 374 pounds of beans (4,535 servings), 272 servings of pasta, 182 servings of canned meat, 686 servings of flour, along with 770 tooth brushes, 242 tubes of tooth paste, 3,229 sanitary napkins, 524 large bars of soap, 450 bath cloths and 1,800 disinfectant wipes. Also included were medicinal ointments, aspirin, band aids, bleach, hammers and coloring books, toys, socks, tee shirts, diapers and Bibles.

In addition to the 155 buckets collected, $1,520.00 was also raised by chapter members and business partners to cover the transportation costs of sending the buckets to Haiti on October 28.

In the wake of Hurricane Matthew the IT&S Facet was humbled to report a successful Friendship Month project and look forward to continuing the legacy of friendship and service locally and abroad for many more years.
