As kids are getting into “back-to-school” mode, it’s a great time to get little ones ready for the year ahead. And while they’re busy learning their ABCs and 123s in the classroom, it’s important to keep them exploring, discovering and engaged at home as well.
Children are naturally creative if given the time and space to design. Inspire kids to express themselves freely and creatively by dedicating spaces in your home to open-ended play.
Parents can encourage discovery and fun by placing books, musical instruments and arts and crafts supplies at children’s eye level, while the availability of dress-up clothes and role-play items can inspire imaginative play.
Interactive toys are another great way for kids to explore and discover at home. For example, the new Touch & Learn Activity Desk Deluxe from VTech is a three-in-one desk that comes with interactive activity cards that let kids hone their reading and math skills, as well as learn nursery rhymes, shapes and animals through engaging content.
Designed for children between two and five years old, the desk features grow-with-me content that is expandable for extended play value. It transforms from a desk into both an easel and chalkboard and includes plenty of space for art supplies to encourage natural play and discovery. “Research shows that early interactions with language, letters, vocabulary and reading are the basic building blocks of literacy and language development,” says Dr. Deborah Libby, early childhood language and reading expert and VTech Expert Panel member. “The Touch & Learn Activity Desk Deluxe offers a variety of engaging content that introduces important developmental concepts at an early age.”
While social skills will be enhanced in preschool and other out-of-the-house settings, you can continue this important development at home. Set up regular playdates with other children. Spend time with young children conversing, reading and playing.
Make sure games include physical activity and time spent outdoors. Encourage kids to explore plants, flowers and local wildlife in your own backyard. The benefits of both exercise and connection with the natural world are extensive.
Parents can foster future success in school and beyond by taking a few important steps at home. Early childhood opportunities for growth, development and discovery are crucial. With a little thought and planning, they can also be fun.
