FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FIRST LADY MARSHA BARBOUR VISITS DELTA SCHOOLS (Jackson, Miss.) - First Lady Marsha Barbour visited schools in Yazoo County today to observe how math intervention programs are being utilized to increase student achievement. "I'm glad to have the opportunity to be in my hometown witnessing first-hand how these programs are utilized in our schools," said Mrs. Last Thursday, she joined Mississippi Department of Education officials on visits to schools in Indianola and Humphreys County. The group met with school officials and toured classrooms at Carver Lower/Upper Elementary School in Indianola and Ida Greene Elementary School in Belzoni to see first-hand how a school can raise the standards and determine ways in which communities and government officials can assist. Carver Lower/Upper Elementary School has made progress in reading, language arts and math as they have implemented the school reform model, America's Choice/Mississippi's Choice. Ida Greene Elementary School was named one of the 10 Priority Schools in 2003. After implementing the America's Choice/Mississippi's Choice model, Ida Greene made great strides in student achievement and was rated a Level 3-Successful school. In addition, they met the Adequate Yearly Progress requirements under No Child Left Behind in all three areas.
