Quinn Smith
Senior business management and marketing major at SC State University, Quinn Smith, has been named a 2016 HBCU All- Star, a prestigious recognition that is part of a White House leadership development initiative in support of historically black colleges and universities.

Smith is active on the SC State campus. He is a member of the Honors College, Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, the director of the Student Ambassador Program for the School of Business, vice president of the Student Government Association and a former four-year member of the Marching 101 Band.

Smith, originally from Orangeburg, South Carolina, was inspired by his mother, a graduate of SC State, Gwendolyn Smith, ‘81, to ignite positive change within himself and encourage others to be influential leaders as well.

Smith stated, “I have been blessed with this opportunity to educate my peers, family and community about the importance of academics and civic engagement.”

The goal of the HBCU All-Stars program is to recognize students for their accomplishments in academics, leadership and community engagement. This initiative seeks to enhance students’ professional development and pave the way for them to be impactful leaders in the world around them.

As a part of the criteria for being named an HBCU All- Star, Smith wrote an essay on why he qualified to be a HBCU All- Star, emphasizing various aspects of his leadership abilities. He also wrote an essay that included details on implementing a policy geared toward assisting students with disabilities at SC State to improve accessibility around campus and provide online resources.

Smith recognizes his professors for their dedicated mentorship, which he said helped to contribute to this latest accomplishment.

Smith, who is currently on travel in Washington, D.C. to attend the HBCU All-Stars Conference, as part of the National HBCU Week Conference, acknowledged his obligations as a leader and said he wishes to represent SC State University well.

“I will continue to raise the bar and give back to my community everything it has taught me, and I look forward to representing SC State University with honor,” he said.
