Smalls Institute for Music and Youth Leadership Receives Grant From S.C. Arts Commission
The Smalls Institute for Music and Youth Leadership has been awarded a $1,700 grant by the South Carolina Arts Commission for the 2014 fiscal year. This General Operating Support for Organizations Grant will assist the organization with daily operations, as well as, travel expenses and fuel support for the Smalls Institute Music Mobile.
The Smalls Institute for Music and Youth Leadership provides mobile music classroom instruction in piano, guitar and percussions to students attending Title I schools; as well as provides outreach programs and services promoting youth leadership. The Music Mobile and its programs currently serve students at Haut Gap Middle School, Murray LaSaine Elementary School, James Island Elementary School, and an 8-week Summer Camp through the City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Department at McMahon/Hampton Park. Opportunities for public performance are also available to these students, as well as Orchestra students at CE Williams Middle School.
“The S.C. Arts Commission grant will enable Smalls Institute to help fill the gap in music and arts programs in some of our public schools where funding cuts have hit hardest,” said Smalls Institute Co-Founder and CFO Sherry Smalls. “This funding helps us achieve our mission of providing mobile music instruction and leadership programs enriching the education experience for the children in our local neighborhoods and communities.”
Several neighboring companies, organizations and/or individuals are helping the Smalls Institute meet its obligation of matching the Arts Commission grant with local dollars. Those who are supporting the grant project include: Coastal Community Foundation of SC Open Grants Program, Coastal Community Foundation of SC Bakker Family Fund, Bi-Lo Boosters Plus Program, Paisano’s Pizza Grill of James Island and West Ashley, Kinder Morgan Foundation, The Joanna Foundation and the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs and the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Program through their joint administration of the Lowcountry Quarterly Arts Grant Program and the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC.
