100 Volunteers Needed to Support Summer Reading Program

Reading Partners, a nonprofit dedicated to closing the reading achievement gap for struggling readers in under-resourced elementary schools, is pleased to announce that it will be providing summer tutoring in partnership with the City of Charleston and the Charleston County School District.

One hundred more volunteers are still needed to serve as tutors! The organization relies on hundreds of volunteers during the school year to provide one-on-one instruction to help build foundational literacy skills.  Students enrolled into the program are reading anywhere from one month to two and a half years behind grade level.

South Carolina students who are not reading on grade level by 4th grade have an 88% chance of never catching up, and are four times more likely to dropout of high school.

By integrating individualized literacy support and mentorship into summer camp programs, Reading Partners aims to curb the reading loss that occurs during the summer months for 80% of students living in high poverty areas.

Volunteers are needed at:

  • Arthur Christopher Community Center, 265 Fishburne St., Charleston from June 4- August 10

  • Hunley Park Elementary, 1000 Michigan Avenue, North Charleston from June 11- July 19, with a week off for the July 4th holiday.

Sessions are one hour long, and will run Monday through Thursday.  Orientation and ongoing support is provided for all volunteer tutors. No experience is necessary. For more information, please call 843-860-3915 or email [email protected].  To register to volunteer, please visit www.readingpartners.org.
