Eastside native Kimberly Bowman has not wasted any time plotting her rise in the local media market as the 21 year old has helmed “So Exquisite Charleston” for over a year now.

So Exquisite, a magazine established in March 2013, started as an online publication that highlights talented individuals in the area’s black community in such fields as fashion, entertainment, and education. As of May 15, though, the company has expanded from the web onto printed bi-monthly editions.

Bowman, the 2010 valedictorian of Burke High School, earned a full scholarship to Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. The scholar wrote for the school paper as an undergrad. She prodigiously graduated early with a bachelor’s degree in communication in 2012.

As well as being the owner of So Exquisite, Bowman writes many of the articles published and employs a devoted team to push content to their readers with videos, photos, and event promotion. She distributes the physical copies herself. The boss even created the logo of the organization.

Discouraged by the lack of jobs in the city, Bowman has taken the bull by the horns and followed her childhood dream of running a business. She is breaking the mold of the common perception of the lazy, aimless, and entitled millennial as a tenacious overachiever. She appreciates her family and team for all of their help.

So Exquisite’s owner seeks to motivate the public and engage with them on intriguing topics while taking advantage of the city’s diversity. While it is geared towards young adults, overall message the publication has gained a growing following for all ages in the Holy City.

The former Bulldog is proud of her accomplishments so far but has many other aspirations for herself. For example, she envisions creating a summer camp for children, designing leggings, and further ventures in event planning. Giving back to the community is also listed prominently on her agenda. Questions about her seemingly novice status may serve for an interesting conversation or two but she’s undaunted, both excited for the future and looking forward to proving people wrong.

Print media’s inevitable demise has not faded Bowman in the least. The young lady has taken an earnest approach to her work by keeping content easily relatable. She thinks of herself as choosy when selecting interviews but strives to support everyone. A visual person at heart, the writer’s passion is seen in her works.

The upcoming July issue will be the designer edition with several local players featured. Kimberly Bowman and her team are providing another positive outlet for blacks to showcase their skills and get noticed by the masses. Visit for more information and see what’s good in the town brought to you by one of Charleston’s brightest young minds.
