Governor Barbour Makes Appointments to the State Forestry Commission

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointments of Richard H. Thoms, of Newton, and Arthur P. Waymire, of Byhalia, to the Mississippi State Forestry Commission. The commission is designed to provide leadership in forest protection, forest management, and information about the forests of Mississippi.

“These appointees are well-qualified,” said Governor Barbour. “Together, they have years of experience in forestry and conservation. I feel confident they will serve the people of Mississippi well.”

Richard H. Thoms is co-owner of Richton Tie and Timber, LLC, where he has also served as its Area Manager and Vice President. Thoms has worked as the Chairman of the Zoning Board for the City of Newton and is currently Chairman of the Mississippi Institute for Forestry Inventory. He earned an Associate’s degree from Jones County Junior College. Thoms went to Mississippi State University and the University of North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in business. Thoms has been a member and Director of the Newton Chamber of Commerce. He has also served as President of the Newton Jaycees. From 1971 to 1977, Thoms served in the Mississippi National Guard. Professionally, Thoms is a member of the National Forum on Substainable Forestry, the Board of Directors for the Forest Resources Association, the Mississippi Forestry Association, and the Southern Pine Electric Power Association.

Arthur P. Waymire is the retired President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Memphis, Tennessee, and currently works as a certified tree farmer. Waymire is the owner and manager of Foxden Plantation, a 2,104-acre certified tree farm. He is the organizing and past President of Marshall County Forestry Association and a member of the Marshall County Forestry Association Board of Directors. Waymire is an Executive Committee and Strategic Planning Committee member of the Mississippi Forestry Association. In 2002, he was awarded the “Conservationist of the Year for the State of Mississippi” and in 2003 was awarded the “Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year for the State of Mississippi.” Waymire serves on the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center Producer Advisory Council on the Forestry Commodity Group and was chairman of this group in 2004. He graduated from Memphis State University with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration.
