Governor Appoints Johnson, Martin to Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointments of Stella M. Johnson, of Tupelo, and Barbara Martin, of Clinton, to the Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists. The purpose of this board is to ensure that the citizens of Mississippi are protected from the unprofessional, improper, unauthorized, and unqualified practice of social work and marriage and family therapy.

“These appointees are well-qualified for this board,” said Governor Barbour. “Stella and Barbara have extensive therapy and social work experience, and I feel confident they will serve the people of Mississippi well.”

Stella Johnson is employed by the North Mississippi Medical Center Behavioral Health Center. While at North Mississippi Medical Center, Johnson has served as a counselor and developed two programs providing day hospitalization to elderly psychiatric patients. She has also provided intensive outpatient services for other patients. Johnson is a Board member of SAFE, Inc., Chair of the Mississippi National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Leadership committee, and has served as Board member and Program Unit Chair of the Mississippi NASW. She received her Bachelor’s degree in sociology from Jackson State University and her Master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. In 1998, Johnson was named as one the “Outstanding Young Women in America.”

Barbara Martin is the Marriage and Family Therapy Clinical and Placement Coordinator and an adjunct professor at the Reformed Theological Seminary. Martin also works at a private practice. In addition, she has worked as an adjunct professor and therapist at Belhaven College, and a teacher at Hillcrest High School. While practicing at Belhaven, Martin was selected to develop a counseling serving for the students at the College. Martin received her Bachelor’s degree from Belhaven College and her Master’s degree from the Reformed Theological Seminary. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, Planning Board of CAPS for Southeast Conference, and Association for Play Therapy, Inc.
