Governor Barbour Appoints Gordon, Chaney to the Southern Regional Education Legislative Advisory Council
(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointment of Senator Jack Gordon, of Okolona, and Senator Mike Chaney, of Vicksburg, to the Southern Regional Education Legislative Advisory Council. This council is part of the nationwide education interstate compact that assists states with education issues. Gordon and Chaney will serve as the Legislative liaisons for the council from Mississippi.
“These legislators are very well-qualified to serve in this capacity,” said Governor Barbour. “Both Senators are long-time members of the Mississippi Legislature, and I feel confident they will work dutifully with this organization to promote education in the state.”
Senator Jack Gordon is the owner of Polyfoam Manufacturing of Tupelo Oil. He is a member of the Houston Exchange Club in addition to the Okolona Chamber of Commerce. Senator Gordon is married to the former Martha Ann Estes.
Gordon served in the House of Representatives for 8 years and has been serving in the Mississippi Senate for 21 years. Gordon is Chairman of the Appropriations committee. He also serves on the Environmental Protection, Conservation & Water Resources; Fees, Salaries & Administration; Highways & Transportation; Judiciary, Division A; Legislative Budget; Local & Private and Oil, Gas & Other Minerals committees.
Senator Mike Chaney is a businessman and farmer. He is affiliated with the Rotary Club, the Economic Development Foundation of Warren County, the Mississippi Economic Council, and the Vicksburg-Warren Chamber of Commerce. Senator Chaney is also a member of the VFW and the American Legion, and is a Vietnam veteran. He is married to the former Mary Thurmond.
Before serving as a senator, Chaney served in the House of Representatives for six years. He has been serving in the Mississippi Senate since 2000. Senator Chaney is Chairman of the Education committee. He also serves on the Agriculture; Appropriations; Congressional Redistricting; Environmental Protection, Conservation & Water Resources; Insurance; Legislative Reapportionment; Ports & Marine Resources and Universities & Colleges committees.
