Governor Barbour Appoints De Gruy to Capital Defense Counsel (Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour today announced the appointment of Andre De Gruy, of Jackson, to the Mississippi Capital Defense Counsel. This counsel is designed to provide representation to indigent parties under indictment for death penalty eligible offenses. “Andre is well-qualified for this position,” Governor Barbour said. “He has extensive education and experience in the legal field and will serve the people of Mississippi well.” De Gruy has served as director of the Mississippi Office of the Capital Defense Counsel since 2001. He was the assistant public defender in Hinds County from 1996 to 2001 and previously worked as executive director of the Mississippi Capital Defense Resource Center, Inc., where he also had served as a staff attorney. He is a past president of the Mississippi Public Defenders Association and currently serves as a member of its board of directors. De Gruy has lectured on criminal defense law at several CLE programs sponsored by the Mississippi Judicial College, the University of Mississippi, and the Mississippi Attorneys for Constitutional Justice. Additionally, he has published numerous criminal defense articles, the Death Penalty Update, and the capital defense section of the Trial Handbook for Mississippi Public Defenders. De Gruy attended Nichols State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and received his law degree from the Mississippi College School of Law. ###
