Governor Barbour Appoints Canon to Mississippi Board of Directors of Prison Industries Corporation

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointment of Dr. William “Bill” Canon, of Columbus, to the Board of Directors of the Prison Industries Corporation. The Corporation functions to provide realistic work experiences for sentenced, adult offenders residing within Mississippi State Correctional Institutions by providing workforce skills training to support economic self-sufficiency upon release, reduce recidivism and reduce the overall costs of government operations.

“I am confident he will serve the people of Mississippi well,” said Governor Barbour. “Bill knows this entity well through his many years in state government.”

Dr. Bill Canon is currently retired from practicing veterinarian medicine. He served in the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserve, earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and serving as the Liaison Officer to the Veterinary Department at Mississippi State University. He has served as President of the Northeast Mississippi chapter and as Director, Vice President, and President of the Mississippi chapter. In 1989, Dr. Canon received the “Veterinarian of the Year” award from this professional group.

Dr. Canon attended Mississippi State University and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University. He has a long history of community involvement, including serving as the Director of the Magnolia Kiwanis Club and Committee Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Canon is a member of the Advisory Council of the Lowndes County 4-H Club, the President’s Advisory Council for Mississippi University for Women, the Board of Directors of the Lowndes County Humane Society, and the Advisory Committee of the Tennessee Tombigbee Bridge Construction.
