Governor Barbour Appoints Browning to Mississippi
Civil War Battlefield Commission

(Jackson, Miss.)—Governor Haley Barbour today announced the appointment of Steve Browning, of Madison, to the Mississippi Civil War Battlefield Commission. This commission works to identify and prioritize the state’s Civil War sites for preservation, interpretation, and public acquisition through its workings with a variety of private and non-profit organizations, such as the Civil War Preservation Trust and the American Battlefield Protection Program.

“Steve is well-qualified to serve on this historical commission,” Governor Barbour said. “He has a respectable work ethic and high regard for Mississippi’s past, and I feel confident Steve will serve the citizens of Mississippi well in this capacity.”

Browning currently works for Hayes Dent Public Strategies, LLC; prior to this, he served as executive director of Mississippians for Economic Progress (MFEP), a non-profit coalition of more than 50 professional, trade, and medical associations promoting court room fairness. During Browning’s tenure at MFEP, the Mississippi Legislature passed the 2004 Tort Reform Act, the most comprehensive civil justice reform legislation ever enacted by any state legislative body in American history, according to the United States Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform and the Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation.

From 1998 to 2002, Browning served under U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott in Washington, D.C. in a variety of capacities, including Legislative Assistant for aviation, agriculture, banking and Indian affairs issues. Notably, Browning was involved in congressional passage of the Aviation and Infrastructure Reform Act for the 21st Century (AIR-21), which increased Federal funding to state and local governments for airport improvement projects.

Browning is a 1995 graduate of Mississippi State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in political science. He is also a 1999 masters of public policy and administration graduate from MSU. He is married to the former Mary Alice Tyson of Montgomery, Ala.
