Palmetto Youth Connections Story of Success: Kori Seabrook

Kori Seabrook
By Career Coach Rebekah Wilkes

Kori Seabrook came to Palmetto Youth Connections (PYC) as a High School graduate in November 2013. Kori turned to PYC for assistance with acquiring knowledge and skills that would prepare her for the workplace. Upon enrolling in PYC, Kori met with her Career Coach, Mrs. Wilkes and made a list of tasks she needed to accomplish in order to meet her ultimate goal of becoming an administrative assistant. Kori's goals included, increasing Math TABE scores, obtaining a Silver Workkeys certificate, completing the Career Smart workshop, completing Microsoft Office training, and then starting a career as an administrative assistant making above minimum wage.

After taking the math TABE assessment, Kori quickly realized her journey toward meeting her goals would not be easy and she would have to stay focused. Kori attended remediation classes at Summerville Adult Education to refresh her Math skills. Kori took the TABE assessment several times increasing her scores slowly.

At times, Kori wanted to give up feeling that she was not going to increase her math TABE scores high enough to be eligible to go to training or move on to the next goal. Kori stated, "My career coach, Mrs. Wilkes didn't allow me to make excuses or give up, she was constantly giving me words of encouragement and pep talks. She reassured me that everything was going to be okay and that I was able to meet my goals as long as I didn't give up. She maintained constant contact with me. If she didn't see me for a few days she would call to check on me to make sure I stayed motivated."

After obtaining a Silver Workkeys certificate, Kori completed PYC's employability skills workshop called Career Smart. Kori stated, "PYC has given me the resources and skills in order to be successful and help me understand the importance of work ethic." Kori's journey to completing Microsoft Office training started to become a long journey for Kori.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, it took Kori several months to complete her Microsoft Office Specialist training. Kori once again felt like giving up at times, but stuck with it never losing sight of her goal of completing all three levels of the training (Microsoft Word level 1, 2, and 3, Microsoft Outlook level 1, 2 3, and Microsoft Excel levels 1, 2, 3).

After completing her training, Kori was eager to find a job as an administrative assistant. Kori met with her Career Coach, Mrs. Wilkes weekly and at times several times a week to search for jobs. Kori received many responses from employers stating that even though she had completed Microsoft Office training she was not qualified for the jobs because of gaps in her employment history. Kori had to do whatever it took to accomplish her goal of becoming an administrative assistant. Kori started her work experience at the Dorchester Prosperity Center as an administrative assistant in order to gain experience to make her more qualified for administrative assistant jobs.

In August 2015, shortly into her work experience, Kori received a job offer as a career advisor with Palmetto School of Career Development making over $10 an hour with full benefits. This was an offer that Kori couldn't refuse. In regards to her experience with PYC Kori states, "Joining Palmetto Youth Connections is the best decision you can make. What you learn through PYC is wisdom, skills, and knowledge and knowledge is powerful. PYC will support you 100% and will be there for you every step of the way."
