Counter Culture Coffee, the North Carolina-based indie coffee roaster, opens its  Charleston Training Center today at 85 1/2 Spring Street. The Training Center  — Counter Culture's tenth around the country  — will  offer extensive coffee education to both professionals and coffee aficionados.

The roaster's innovative  Counter Intelligence  coffee education program provides workshops and classes for baristas from the area's top restaurants and cafes. CCC will also host the public for free weekly tastings every Friday morning as part of their Tasting@Ten series. Most recently home to boutique design agency FuzzCo, the railroad-style building has one room dedicated to espresso, one exclusively for tastings and one housing the latest cutting-edge coffee equipment.

Outside of its Durham, NC, headquarters, Charleston was one of the first markets the roaster entered nearly 20 years ago, and it has since maintained long-standing ties in the community. Counter Culture can be found in many local coffee shops, restaurants and specialty grocers including City Lights Coffee, The Muddy Water Coffee Bar, Bull Street Gourmet, Hominy Grill, Edmund's Oast and others.

"Since the early days of Counter Culture, we have been fortunate to work with some of the best restaurants and cafes in Charleston. With the opening of our Charleston Training Center, we are excited to offer our partners even greater access to our cutting-edge coffee training, education and support," says founder Brett Smith.

Training Centers serve as a home base not only for local professionals but also the public who may want to learn more about coffee. In addition to the weekly Tasting@Ten series held every Friday at 10am, the public may sign up for classes at the Charleston Training Center through their class listings online. The roaster also hosts special events for the public year-round, from sustainability workshops to guest barista demos.

Through their unique Counter Intelligence program, the company's curriculum and and hands-on training is geared towards empowering each person throughout the coffee supply chain. Through courses including "Milk Mechanics," "Brewing Science," and "Espresso Fundamentals," students learn the skills necessary to ensure quality coffee preparation and the knowledge to confidently engage in meaningful conversation about coffee and its origin and processing.

Coffee professionals can also be certified through two areas of focus: the Certified Barista Program and the Certified Coffee Steward Program. Nationwide locations include New York City; Chicago; Boston; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Asheville, NC; Atlanta; Durham, NC; and a newly opened Bay Area training center and roastery in Emeryville, CA. The company will also open a new Training Center in Los Angeles in early 2016.
