Fifteen high school students have been awarded scholarships to Trident Technical College to pursue a two-year associate degree, paid for by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. The scholarships, awarded to recent graduates from area high schools' Career Academies, are made available through the Chamber's Accelerate Greater Charleston (AGC) initiative which maximizes the region's success by providing assets in the areas of talent, innovation and advocacy.
The 2015 scholarship recipients, who will enter college in the fall, represent the second group of AGC scholarship recipients. Twelve students were awarded scholarships in 2014. All twelve have successfully completed their first year of college and are on track to enter their second year. Eleven of the twelve students from the first group of AGC scholarship recipients were the first generation in their family to attend college.
The scholarship recipients were recognized at the Accelerating Career Education event at Trident Technical College on Tuesday, June 9, 2015. Chamber president and CEO Bryan Derreberry and Career Academy Director Robin Willis presented each student with a scholarship certificate as they walked across the stage in front of 400+ educators, business partners, students and parents. Accelerating Career Education celebrates the significant outcomes achieved throughout the region to impact career readiness.
