Toby Smith Declares Candidacy for Mayor of Charleston
6/4/2015 4:38:13 PM

Toby Smith
Toby Smith may be one of the last to declare her candidacy for what she calls “one of the best jobs” in the Southeast, Mayor of Charleston, SC, but she’s quick to add, “good things come to those who wait.”

Smith was born in Charleston, but grew up in another great city, Philadelphia, PA.  Her family came back home in 1977 and she graduated from Middleton High School in 1981 and USC, Columbia, in 1985. Smith is divorced, lives in the WA (West Ashley) and is a loving Auma (auntie-mama).
Toby Smith has extensive international and domestic professional experience, including eight years in the Federal Government; she’s worked for the Charleston County School District (she coordinated the District’s first bond campaign) and the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. She’s an experienced radio broadcaster and writer. Toby has been a grant writer and a nonprofit consultant for more than a decade.
“Getting involved in the nonprofit world really changed my life,” she notes. “I learned so much by helping other organizations write their IRS applications, develop programs, devise budgets, find resources, write grants and select personnel.”  Since 2013, Toby has been the executive director of Midland Park Community Ministries in North Charleston. “We call it ‘the little pantry that could.’ Midland Park strives to help everyone in need.”

Toby Smith is an associate minister at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Union Heights. Ordained in 2006, she has worked with the youth and Women’s Ministry. “My faith is the richest blessing of my life and exercising it through service to others is extremely rewarding.”
The mayoral race will be Toby’s first run for public office. While her overarching goal is to advocate for all of Charleston; three sub goals include “the edges,” working with the team to complete the International African American Museum, IAAM, and the growth of the WA.
Smith explains: “The communities facing higher rates of unemployment, which are traditionally not at any discussion table, are sitting on the edge of opportunities. Let’s connect those dots. As for the IAAM, I can’t wait! It’ time that we tell our story, and finally, the WA. The growth and impact have been enormous. I look forward to meeting with residents and hearing their thoughts.” With respect to traffic, Smith adds, “the frustrations are known, let’s work together to identify and test viable options.” For Toby Smith, the next five months are going to be exciting. “I have a passion for Charleston—she is poised for the future—and I really want to be her next mayor.”
