Charleston County Government announces the final phases of the Highway 171 Sidewalk project in West Ashley will start May 13.  This project, Phases 2 and 3, is the final portion of the overall project and will complete the objective of providing a pedestrian paved sidewalk from the City of Charleston’s new Northbridge Park to Charlestowne Landing State Park.

Phase 1 of the project was completed by Charleston County and provides a connection from the City of Charleston’s Northbridge Park asphalt multi-use path to the intersection of Orange Grove Road. Phases 2 and 3 of the project will consist of extending the concrete sidewalk along Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Old Towne Road and Ingram Road from Orange Grove Road to the existing Old Towne Road sidewalk at the entrance to Charlestowne Landing State Park. This will also provide connectivity to the sidewalk project previously constructed along Charlestowne Drive and Dickens Street.

  • Construction will begin on Wednesday, May 13 and is expected to last two months; all work is weather permitting
  • Lane closures on Highway 171, as necessary, will only occur from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working at all times
