Rethink Folly Road: A Complete Streets Study
4/30/2015 3:57:36 PM

From May 7-13, a team of sustainable planning, transportation, urban design, economics, and green infrastructure experts will be working with the community to develop a plan for the future of the Folly Road corridor, from Center Street on Folly Beach to the Wappoo Cut Bridge.

The Design Charrette will kick off with an interactive, public hands-on design workshop, where participants will discuss and draw ideas. The design team will then set up a studio in the corridor where they will work rapidly to synthesize input, draw ideas and create a draft vision and plan.

The studio will be open to the public throughout the week for drop-in discussions. Another public session will occur at the close of the charrette where participants will review the draft ideas to give feedback.

What is a Charrette?

Charrette is a French word that translates to “little cart.” At the E´cole des Beaux-Arts, a famous architecture school in 19th-century Paris, students would continue sketching as little carts carried their drawing boards away to be judged and graded.
Today, charrette has come to describe a rapid, intensive, and creative work session in which a design team focuses on a particular design problem and arrives at a collaborative solution. Charrettes are formatted to encourage the exchange of dialogue, allowing residents, stakeholders, and designers to brainstorm on new ideas and evaluate multiple options.

RETHINK FOLLY ROAD: A COMPLETE STREETS STUDY is being undertaken by the Berkeley- Charleston- Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) in association with the City of Charleston, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), the Charleston Area Regional Transit Authority (CARTA), the Town of James Island, the City of Folly Beach, and Charleston County. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential to remake Folly Road as a more sustainable, multimodal corridor, which could become a precedent for the Charleston region.

Yes! Periodic updates will be posted at: and you can follow us on twitter @BCDCoG for updates and news as well.

In addition to the charrette meetings, interested community members can also participate and continue the conversation online at In this “virtual town hall,” stakeholders and community members can generate ideas, help others evolve their ideas, and ultimately prioritize the best ideas for the Folly Road corridor.
