Park Circle Comics To Host Taking Flight Comic Book Show 9 Saturday, May 9
4/30/2015 1:15:15 PM

Park Circle Comics’ Taking Flight Comic Show 9 will be on Saturday, May, 9th from Noon – 5:00 PM at The Sparrow at 1078 East Montague in the historic Park Circle business district. The show will feature a number of talented artists including Sandy Jarrell, Leigh Wells and Tim Showers. All of the participating artists will be available to sign comics, do sketches, take commissions, and talk about comics and art with attendees. This edition of Taking Flight is part of the North Charleston Arts Festival taking place throughout North Charleston May 1- 9.

Sandy Jarrell’s credits include DC Comics Batman ’66, Dynamite Comics Jungle Jim and his own graphic novel Meteor Men which has been nominated for a 2015 Eisner Award. The Eisner Awards (referred to as the Oscar Awards of the comics industry) are given for creative achievement in American comics.

Local artists, Leigh Wells and Tim Showers, will feature art that includes comic book, manga and sci-fi influenced drawings, paintings and sketches.

A donation of $5 is suggested at the door and as in the past all donations will benefit a local charity. This show will benefit the medical fund for local artist Tim Showers. Tim was diagnosed with a rare bone condition called avascular necrosis, a disease that deprives blood circulation to the bone, and has undergone two hip replacement surgeries in the last year. Sponsor charities at previous shows were the beneficiaries of nearly $5,000 in donations. Wonderful organizations that were supported at past events include the Alzheimer’s Foundation, Communities in Schools,Toys for Tots, the Chicora Community Garden and Wings for Kids. Charitable support will continue to be a part of each event as will our practice of donating 100% of our entry fees to a deserving charity.

Park Circle Comics in conjunction with The Sparrow began the Taking Flight comic book shows in July of 2013. Since then, eight successful Taking Flight shows have brought local and regional artists together with fans to have a great time talking about something they all have a passion for, comic books and comic book art. The Taking Flight series of comic book shows have been a tremendous success and the attendance continues to grow for each event.

Plans for the rest of 2015 include continuing to bring fans and artists together with our Taking Flight Comic Shows, which will always have at their core, guest artists and a venue for fans to interact with each other in a family friendly and fun atmosphere. Currently ways to expand these events to add costuming (known as cosplay,) larger art exhibitions and seminars and lectures are being explored.
