Folly, Isle of Palms Beach parks' Yoga Unplugged program kicks off April 6
3/17/2015 3:49:16 PM

What could provide a more serene, spiritual atmosphere for practicing yoga than the strumming of a guitar on the beach? This spring, Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) takes wellness to a new level with Yoga Unplugged. Held ocean-side, these guided yoga sessions also feature live acoustic music.

Participants will find inner peace and connect with nature as the setting sun and salty air mingle with live acoustic music in this beach yoga series. Professionals will guide participants through an invigorating sequence of yoga postures, right on the sand near the shore of these scenic County Park properties. To enhance the atmosphere, a local musician will provide live acoustical accompaniment throughout the session.

Yoga Unplugged sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at beautiful Folly Beach County Park April 6 – May 20. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Yoga Unplugged is offered at serene Isle of Palms County Park from April 7 – May 21. Classes are held as the sun lowers in the sky, from 5:45 – 6:45 p.m.

Interested participants of all fitness and yoga experience levels are invited to take part in the class. Yoga Unplugged is one of many wellness programs held outdoors at Charleston County Parks.

“There’s something about the beach that naturally evokes a playful spirit,” CCPRC’s Fitness and Wellness Programming Manager Allison Foster said. “All of the participants take to the yoga mat with childlike wonder, adapting a ‘try it’ attitude that is otherwise elusive to their practice inside the confines of four walls and hard floors.”

Yoga Unplugged can be experienced as a one-time class, or participants may sign up for multiple classes or the full seven-week series. Those who register for six or more classes will receive a reduced rate of $7, or $5 for residents of Charleston County. Otherwise sessions are $10 per class ($8 for residents of Charleston County). To receive the discounted rate, call 843-795-4386 or register online at using the coupon code “fitmulti.”

Interested participants can also choose to pay the $10 drop-in fee at the gate without registering. Program fees also cover admission into the park gate. Participants should bring a mat and towel.

Yoga Unplugged is one of a number of fitness and wellness programs offered outdoors in the Charleston County Parks. Other programs include Short Circuit, a high-intensity park bootcamp program; Walk and Restore, which combines trail walking with restorative yoga; iSUP and yoSUP, which combine stand up paddleboarding with yoga and intervals of Pilates and barre; and others. “We are encouraging people to look to the parks as a resource for fitness and to embrace the outdoors in their workouts,” Foster said.
