Closings of Black Restaurants in Charleston |

Dear Editor:
I wanted to address the closings of Black restaurants in Charleston County. Clearly it’s not the economy because after church we see many well-dressed residents going to chain restaurants throughout the county.
I would really urge Blacks to support our local food industry which represents Black ownership, pride and history. I realize that it’s more difficult to operate a restaurant as a result of gentrification, with higher cost for real estate, taxes, rent, etc. Yet, the idea of getting home cooked food should be something we hold onto in preserving our heritage and past.
I would like to hear from the restaurants that are still open, so that more people can come out, support and enjoy your foods; as well as have people writing into the newspaper to make sure that these places are well-known, and we can do our utmost to patronize them.
I would also like to see these traditional restaurants think a little bit more about style, their atmosphere and training of staff, so that it will not only be efficient but enjoyable for customers.
Again, I encourage the public to rally around our remaining Low country restaurants.
Sincerely,
Ted Cozart
