Memminger Auditorium will be transformed into a 1920s-era night spot complete with an exclusive performance by the Joe Clarke Big Band on Friday, February 6 for Spoleto Festival USA’s 37th annual auction. Traditionally considered the beginning of the Spoleto Festival USA season, the event dubbed “A Night at the Charleston Club” will include cocktails, a seated dinner, and dancing alongside both a silent and spirited live auction with proceeds benefitting the Festival’s orchestra-in-residence.

Event tickets are available online at spoletousa.org or by calling 843.720.1114. Tickets are $150 per person for open seating, $250 per person for preferred seating, or $2,000 for a premium table of eight. The evening is black-tie optional and 1920s-themed attire is welcome.

In addition to the live event, an online auction will run from January 27 at 9:00am to February 9 at 9:00pm at spoletoauction.com.

This Spoleto auction evening will commence at 7:00pm with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. During this time, guests are invited to use laptop computers located throughout the room to participate in the online auction and to bid on silent auction items, including artwork by Sarah Haynes and Sally King Benedict. A seated dinner will follow with entertainment provided by the Joe Clarke Big Band.

Following dinner and the performance, guests will have the chance to bid on a variety of live auction items including: two round-the-world airline tickets from United Airlines including a stop in Johannesburg, South Africa for two days of private quail hunting with lodging and meals; seven nights at Las Ventanas del Mar in Playa Carrillo, Costa Rica for six people; and a dinner for 12 cooked by renowned chef Mike Lata in your home with wine pairings by Grassroots Wine.

Guests may also bid to sponsor individual members of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra for their residency during the 2015 season. The Festival’s Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy will introduce a prospective member of the 2015 orchestra and conduct a live audition on stage. At the conclusion of the auction events, guests will enjoy dessert and dancing with more music by the Joe Clarke Big Band.

Since its inception, the Festival’s auction has supported the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, a diverse group of accomplished young musicians who compete nationally in rigorous auditions to secure a spot in the ensemble that provides the musical backbone to the Festival. The Festival orchestra was recently heralded by The New York Times for being among “. . . a teeming worldwide pool of young musicians that has never been more gifted.” Musicians who have performed with the orchestra and gone on to win positions in prestigious ensembles worldwide include Analisé Denise Kukelhan, who joins the first violin section of The Cleveland Orchestra this month.

The 39th season of Spoleto Festival USA takes place May 22 to June 7, 2015, in Charleston, SC. This season the orchestra will perform a concert of works by Tan Dun, Barber, and Sibelius, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and two special film events. Members of the orchestra will also perform in the opera Paradise Interrupted and the Music In Time contemporary music series. Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning January 20.
