Workshop: How to Photograph Your Artwork

Whether it’s for promotional print material, a website, or an application for a competition or exhibition, every artist needs good digital photographs of their artwork. Local professional photographer, Jack Alterman, will instruct artists on the basics for photographing artwork in this free 2 hour workshop. The workshop will cover how to photograph paintings and 3D artwork.  Some key points that will be covered include lighting, white balance, the use of polarizing filters, depth of field, and lens use.  Participants must bring a digital camera and be familiar with its basic settings. Artwork will be staged for participants to experiment with taking images. Following the workshop, 20 minute long one-on-one sessions will be offered for artists to gain more personalized instruction from Jack. While the workshop is free, one-on-one sessions are $35.  Note that having artwork photographed by a professional can often cost $50.00 or more per piece, so this is a great opportunity to get some strong images of your work at a low cost.  Remember that getting a good photo of your artwork can mean the difference between selling a piece and not selling a piece, or getting into a show or not getting into a show. Collectors, curators, and jurors often only have the photo of an artwork in front of them, so it needs to accurately represent the work.

Fee: Free workshop (RSVP required); One-on-one sessions are $35 (20 minutes each, by appointment). Call  843-740-5854.
