Timberland High School defeated Keenan High School (Columbia, SC) 35-12 for the Division II-AA Football State Title this past Friday at River Bluff High School in Lexington. The Wolves finished the season undefeated with a record of 16-0, the first perfect season for the Wolves. They are the only team from the Lowcountry to win a state title this season.

Timberland’s fast and athletic defense, which has been stout all year, came up big in the victory. They once again held their opponent under 15 points, something they have accomplished every game this season.

Keenan actually outgained Timberland in yardage (322 to 215) and gained more first downs 13, while the Wolves had 8. But the mistakes by the Raiders led to their defeat.

Two costly turnovers led to Timberland scoring touchdowns on a 37-yard fumble return by Junior Defensive Tackle Josh Alston on the second play fo the game, and an interception return by senior Linebacker Ja’von Whitaker late in the fourth quarter. Alston also blocked a punt that led to another score.

The victory gave Timberland its’ second state title in school history. They previously won the I-AA state championship in 2011. Both teams were coached by Art Craig. Keenan finished the season with a 10-5 record.
