Lowcountry Local First (LLF) will throw the first-ever Buy Local Block Party and Maker Tours to connect consumers with local makers on Saturday, November 22nd during the holiday shopping season and as part of the 8th Buyannual Local Month presented by South State Bank, November 15 – December 15. Buy Local Month is a grassroots movement to build awareness for the positive community benefits of supporting local, independent businesses—particularly during the holiday season, a critical sales time for local, independent retailers. The Buy Local Block Party will take place at Local Works located at 1630 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29405.
“We all love Charleston and don’t want to see it become ‘Anywhere, USA,’ says Jamee Haley, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Lowcountry Local First. “The rise of the Maker movement and rebirth of manufacturing creates good jobs, new economic opportunities, and helps keep the place we call home unique. The Buy Local Block Party and Maker Tours provide a special opportunity during the busy holiday season to support the businesses that are owned by our neighbors, rather than those sending profits out of state or to shareholders,” says Haley.
Makers and urban manufacturers on the Charleston Upper Peninsula and in North Charleston will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the workshops and production spaces of some of Charleston’s finest makers and urban manufacturers. From breweries to woodworking to high-end home products, each tour will include multiple stops, and a tasting at a craft brewery. Maker Tours participants include: Avrett, Bill’s Custom Woodworking, COAST Brewing Company, Folbot, Heavy Aesthetics, Landrum Tables, Palmetto Brewing Company, Perrin Woodworking, Produce Candles and Rewined Candles.
The Buy Local Block Party will feature 35 indie retailers and artisans, curated by Lowcountry Artist Market, as well as local bands on the Awendaw Green stage, food trucks, a beer garden, a Bloody Mary bar, kid’s activities, and the first-ever Lowcountry Local First Maker Tours. The beer garden will feature seven local breweries including COAST Brewing Company, Fat Pig Brewing Company, The Frothy Beard Brewing Company, Holy City Brewing, Tradesmen Brewing Company, Westbrook Brewing Company, and Wooden Skiff Brewing Company, and a Bloody Mary bar by Charleston Distilling Company and Natural Blonde Bloody Mary Mix. Bike riders can utilize Pop-Up Bike Parking courtesy of Charleston Moves.
