A Forum on Education Hosted by Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of AKA Sorority, Inc.

Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosted a "Forum on Education" on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. The event was held at the AKA Building, 689 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC. All of the candidates for State Superintendent of Education and the Charleston County Consolidated School Board were invited.

In attendance were: Dr. Tom Thompson, candidate for State Superintendent, and nine of the eleven Consolidated Board candidates, Mrs. Cindy Bohn Coates, Mr. Kelvin D. Curtis, Ms. Kate Darby, Ms. Shante Ellis, Mr. Edward Fennell, Ms. Sarah S. Johnson, Mr. Eric L. Mack, Mr. Chris Staubes and Mr. Rodney Lewis (write-in).

Mrs. Marguerite Middleton, Vice-President, welcomed the audience and gave a brief overview of the history of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The audience sang, "Lift Every Voice and Sing", accompanied by Mrs. Thuane Fielding.

"Words of Inspiration" were expressed by Mrs. Lottie Otto, Spiritual Advisor at the International and Regional levels. Miss Kimberly Greene, SC State Connection Coordinator provided the Purpose of the gathering and Miss Dorothy "Queensekayi" Jenkins, Chairperson, introduced the Moderator, Mrs. Elizabeth "Liz" Alston.

Mrs. Alston, former Chairperson of Charleston County School Board, presented the "Rules of Engagement" to the Panelists.

Questions were divided into two segments. The first set came from the Connection Committee with a maximum of three (3) minutes for the response. Mrs. Rosemary Simmons served as Time Keeper.

Questions included: stating the difference between the Consolidated Board and the Constituent Boards, plans for the future in terms of equitable funding and improved relationships, diversity, charter schools and school choice.

The second set of questions came from the audience who wrote them on index cards which were collected by Mrs. Viette Aikens and given to the Moderator.

At the conclusion. Mrs. Julia Wilder, Co-chairperson, made a special presentation to Mrs. Alston who was outstanding as Moderator.

Mrs. Vertelle Middleton, 12th South Atlantic Regional Director, recognized special guests and Miss Margaret Thomas, President, gave closing remarks.

Mrs. Joan Dehne from the League of Women Voters provided numerous brochures and other handouts.

A wonderful reception for all in attendance was catered by Mrs. Joyce Whitehurst owner of Heavenly Hands Cartering Service.

Hostesses were Mrs. Rosa Bowens, Mrs. Delores Greene, Mrs. Rosalie Smith, and Mrs. Violet Washington.

Based on written evaluations, it was a very informative evening!
