Lowcountry Local First (LLF) announces the 8th annual Buy Local Month presented by South State Bank, November 15 – December 15. Buy Local Month is a grassroots movement to build awareness for the positive community benefits of supporting local, independent businesses—particularly during the holiday season. In addition to urging the community to shift their dollars to local businesses, Lowcountry Local First will throw the first-ever community-supported Buy Local Block Party & Maker Tours to connect consumers with local makers on Saturday, November 22nd. The Buy Local Block Party will take place at Local Works located at 1630 Meeting Street.
“If we don’t invest in what we value—the businesses unique to the Lowcountry and owned by our neighbors—we run the risk of losing what makes us special and becoming ‘Anywhere, USA,’” said Lowcountry Local First Executive Director Jamee Haley. “By supporting locally-owned businesses, consumers are supporting job creation and reinvesting more dollars in the local economy, which in turn bolsters our tax base, leading to improvements to parks, schools and the community at large,” said LLF member and Wonder Works toy store owner Christine Osborne.
Over 75% of businesses located in cities with active Buy Local campaigns reported increased customer traffic or other benefits from these local initiatives. They also reported sales growth of 7.0% on average in 2013, compared to 2.3% for independent businesses in places without such initiatives, according to a national study of 2,600 independent businesses by the non-profit Institute of Local Self Reliance. “As the Charleston region grows, Lowcountry Local First will be working to make sure those businesses who are invested here are able to stay here,” said Haley.
In addition to growing awareness, Lowcountry Local First will hold the first-ever community-supported Buy Local Block Party & Maker Tours on Saturday, November 22nd to connect consumers to local artisans and makers during holiday shopping season. The Block Party will feature local wares for sale, food trucks, live local bands throughout the day, the ‘Mini Cine’ showing local short films, a beer garden and Bloody Mary bar. Attendees can purchase tickets for the Maker Tours and explore the production spaces of companies making homegrown products. There’s a suggested donation of $10 at the Block Party, and Maker Tour schedule and tickets can be found ONLINE.
Buy Local Month would not be possible without the support of sponsors, including: South State Bank, American Automated Payroll (AAP), Appalachian Springs, Nelson Printing, City Corridor, Charleston Magazine and Charleston City Paper.
