Global Collaboration Offers Charleston Youth an Inspiring Perspective on Their Place in the World

Charleston-based Barbados and the Carolinas Foundation has teamed up with Detroit-based Atlantic Impact and Belgium-based Aminus3 to host ZOOM IN REACH OUT on October 18, 2014. This collaborative educational program will allow Charleston youth to explore Charleston’s history through another set of eyes so students can see their hometown from a different perspective.

According to event organizers, "Zoom In Reach Out is a gathering of people who are curious about the world where they live and how that is communicated to others. Our medium is self-expression through photography and story. We encourage students and photographers to zoom in to learn more about their world and themselves and then reach out by sharing that experience with others via story and connecting through photography."

Participating students from Charleston County public schools and Jenkins Orphanage will be mentored by experienced photographers who encourage creative self-expression with each student, while at the same time both will learn from each other what is valued and important to a youthful generation. Zoom In Reach Out is a journey of discovery providing a unique opportunity for students and photographers to explore our city from a historic perspective as well as to see and learn about culture and life in places that participants may not have experienced before.

What is the significance of Zoom In Reach Out coming to Charleston?

The program is a unique opportunity that will allow Charleston youth to gain exposure to diverse perspectives and see their own city in another light. Urban youth often barely have the chance to step outside their neighborhoods. This is a chance for them to expand their world view, and their own sense of selves, in an engaging and inspiring environment.

.

It is also an opportunity to showcase Charleston and Charleston’s people to an international audience. Following the event, the organizers of Zoom In Reach Out will be sharing photos of the city to their supporters, as well as photos of students and photographers exploring the city together.
