Local Chapter of National Stuttering Association to Host Event October 18
10/7/2014 1:57:48 PM

The National Stuttering Association will host a Family Fun Day on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Wescott Park, 9006 Dorchester Road, in North Charleston. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a cookout from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

The event’s speakers and facilitators will provide information and support to young children and teens who stutter, their families and professionals who work with them.

“Kids and teens will meet others who stutter, while parents can connect with other parents and speech-language professionals in a fun and supportive environment,” says event organizer Caroline Pittard.

The National Stuttering Association is the world’s largest stuttering support organization dedicated to providing support and resources to people who stutter. About one percent of the population stutters at any given time, and approximately five percent of people experience stuttering at some point in their lives.  While the causes of stuttering are unknown, it is primarily a neurological disorder and is genetic in some cases.

Support group participation helps reduce the negative effects of stuttering and enhances the success of speech therapy. The National Stuttering Association works closely with speech professionals and refers people who stutter to speech-language pathologists who have the specialized qualifications needed for effective treatment.

Registration for the Family Fun Day is available on-site, and preregistration is encouraged online at
