South Carolina Ranks First in the Nation for the Highest Participation for International Walk to School Day

The National Center for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) announced that South Carolina had the highest participation rate of any state on International Walk to School Day (IWALK) for the second year in a row with more than one quarter of all public elementary and middle schools participating in 2013.

Thousands of schools across America and more than 40 countries will celebrate Walk to School Day on October 8, 2014. These events emphasize the importance of physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion, concern for the environment, building connections between families, schools, and the broader community.

South Carolina Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School Program uses federal funding to assist schools and communities with implementing SRTS projects. Since 2009 the SRTS Program has:

  • created a SRTS Resource Center which helps schools, school districts, and communities throughout South Carolina to build and sustain SRTS programs. The Resource Center provides materials, technical assistance and program support for our school partners at no cost
  • ranked in the top six in the United States with IWALK school events registered every year since 2011
  • had a 104% increase in International Walk to School Day participation from 2011 to 2013
  • had its highest number of schools register events ever (SC had 277 registered schools in 2013)

Those interested can visit www.SCSafeRoutes.org or call the Resource Center Hotline at 1-855-4SC-SRTS for more information about events, materials, and opportunities to participate.
