City Gallery Exhibit

Studio artists from Redux Contemporary Art Center will be exhibiting work in a variety of subjects and media in this 3rd annual group show.  Featured artists include Todd Anderson, Mariah Channing, Morgan Cole, Teil Duncan, Chloe Gilstrap, Camela Guevara, Alizey Khan, Kate MacNeil, India McElroy, Paula McInerny, Raven Roxanne, Jane Ann Sweeny, Lulie Wallace, and Trever Webster. The public is invited to attend a free reception hosted by the artists on Thursday, October 2, from 5:00-7:00pm.

National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition

The ninth annual National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition FY 14/15 is currently installed at the stunning North Charleston Riverfront Park.  The eleven month exhibition features eleven established and emerging artists from seven states displaying imaginative and thought provoking sculpture.  Visitors can enjoy the sculpture displays among ten acres of walking paths, a fishing pier, boardwalk, playground, and children’s play fountain. Organized and presented by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department.

North Charleston Farmers Market Concerts

The North Charleston Farmers Market takes place every Thursday through October 30. Offerings include an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce, food vendors, art & craft booths, and rotating entertainment. Enjoy live music every 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Thursday. The Shelly Waters Duo will perform Louisiana swamp classics and Americana favorites on October 2. Pete Ledbetter will present acoustic Americana tunes on October 16. Enjoy Celtic music by McGurk’s Folly on October 23. The last market of the season on October 30 will feature roadhouse soul by Steve Hardy.

Paper Making Workshop

Adult students will learn the basic techniques of western papermaking with award winning papermaker and bookbinder, Kris Westerson. Students will create four to six 8 ½” x 11” sheets from abaca pulp, then decorate their fresh sheets of paper with pigmented cotton pulp using squirt bottles. Water will be removed using a press and options for drying the sheets will be discussed. Participants should wear clothing and shoes that can get wet - rubber soled shoes are best.  Materials are provided.

Enjoy live demonstrations by local visual artists and/or learn about area arts organizations every 2nd Thursday of the month.  Members of the Goose Creek Artist Guild will present a painting demo on October 9th.

Painting Workshop –Studio Session with Deborah Meyer

Adults ages 18 and up will receive one-on-one assistance from seasoned artist and art instructor, Deborah Meyer, to develop and refine paintings that they currently have in progress or that are ready to be tackled.  Students must bring their own materials: paints, brushes, canvases, easels (if use of table is not preferred).

Harvest Festival & Block Party

Fall fun for all ages! Enjoy kid’s activities and ghost stories by the Backporch Storytellers (4:00-6:30pm), an artist market featuring booths by members of the North Charleston Artist Guild, exhibits of student artwork and work by the City’s new Artist-in-Residence, Alexandra Roberts, costume contests for children, adults, and pets (6:45pm), trick-or-treating for kids 12 & under, and live music by The V-Tones, HoneySmoke, and Juke Joint Jonny. North Charleston Exhibition Opportunities FY2015-16

Visual artists and artist groups may apply to exhibit original works at the North Charleston City Gallery, located in the common areas of the Charleston Area Convention Center Complex, or North Charleston City Hall for July 2015-June 2016. These locations offer great exposure for artists seeking to reach local patrons as well as out-of-state visitors.  Exhibits are rotated on a monthly or bi-monthly basis and may feature two or more artists concurrently. There is no fee to apply. North Charleston Arts Festival Participation Opportunities (NOTE: Application release date & deadline moved up one month!)

National, regional, and local artists and performers in the areas of music, dance, theatre, visual arts, photography, crafts, media arts and literature are welcome to apply to participate in the 2015 North Charleston Arts Festival, May 1-9.  This annual nine-day celebration of the arts provides over 30,000 residents and visitors with an array of free and moderately priced performances, exhibitions and activities that take place throughout North Charleston and the surrounding area. In addition to the Artist Application, local performing artists may also consider applying for the Opening Processional, which has kicked off the Arts Festival’s Main Event festivities for over ten years!  Processional participants include groups dressed in brightly colored outfits and costumes, volunteers carrying giant puppets, banners and other crafted props, jugglers, dance troupes, and local performing groups. Participants parade around the Convention Center Complex into the North Charleston Performing Arts Center Auditorium where the celebration continues with a Community Groups Performance Spotlight, featuring performances by pre-selected groups.  Both applications will be available on October 1 and can be downloaded at NorthCharlestonArtsFest.com/apply. There is no fee to apply.
