Charleston County unveils initial plans for Palmetto Commerce Parkway Phase III

Charleston County Government hosted a public meeting at R.B. Stall High School tonight during which staff unveiled initial concepts for Palmetto Commerce Parkway Phase III.

Once completed, the project would provide more than five miles of a four-lane road connecting the existing Palmetto Commerce Parkway with South Aviation Avenue.

More than 200 residents were in attendance to hear about PCP3’s benefits and to have their questions answered. Among the highlights was the news that initial 25-year traffic projections estimate that PCP3 will remove 13 percent of trips from Dorchester Road and I-26, and 20 percent of trips from Rivers Avenue.

“Charleston’s east-west corridors are stretched and heading toward failure,” said Richard Turner, Charleston County’s project manager for PCP3. “I-26, Dorchester Road and Rivers Avenue need relief, and Palmetto Commerce Parkway Phase III would provide that help.”

Additionally, PCP3 would facilitate economic development by increasing connectivity in the region between Ladson Road and International Boulevard, an area that includes a number of major employers and expansion opportunities.

Up-to-date project details on initial alternatives are now available at pcp3.charlestoncounty.org. The public now has 15 days to weigh in on the project. A public hearing on PCP3 is tentatively scheduled for June 2015.

Our two councilwomen do not want the road to go down Ward Ave and continue down the railroad tracks toward Ashley Phosphate Road but I feel this is the best option I have seen.
