8/20/2014 4:09:03 PM

Lowcountry Voices Gospel Choir
As Lowcounty Voices begins its 3rd season, this young choir has amassed quite a profile in just its two short years of performing.

Some of their most exciting past performances include a performance for the National Prayer Breakfast for the U.S. Air Force, headlining with gospel greats Kurt Carr, Donald Malloy, and Dorothy Norwood at Rick Joyner’s 1st Annual Gospel Extravaganza, two 4 day NY-NJ Tours, a SRO crowd at A Music Tribute To Nelson Mandela, a rousing performance at the National Conference of Black Mayors in Atlanta, GA, and a collaboration with Charleston’s own renown jazz conductor, Charlton Singleton, in Gospel Meets Jazz Meets Gospel.

But the 2014-2015 season is looking to be even more exciting. The season opener will be on Saturday, October 18th at the historic Ebenezer AME Church, downtown Charleston as the choir will premiere its newest concert theme – Let The Church Say Amen. The choir will head back north in November in a New Jersey Tour where the folks love to hear the choir perform – Charleston style. December, the choir will be featured in Christmas concerts at various churches under the theme Behold The Star.

Sunday, January 25th, 2015, the choir will be presented in concert by the Kiawah Island Arts Council at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 4PM with a reprise of the Gospel Meets Jazz Meets Gospel. February, 2015 will mark the choir’s 1st live CD recording to be released later in 2015.

March 21st will see the Charleston premiere of the celebrated Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass to be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church, downtown Charleston, with guest conductor, the eminent Dr. Roland Carter. The culminating event will be a part of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Festival on May 2, 2015 at the Park Circle Presbyterian Church in North Charleston, and will feature the artistry of Jonathan Green in a musical collage – Singing The Colors of Jonathan Green.

The choir’s final event for the 2014-2015 season will be a Bermuda Summer Tour in July via Celebrity Crusie Lines on which the choir is looking to performing on board the cruise ship, as well as confirmed performances at a AME church and government offices on the island of Bermuda. It will be a fantastic end to an amazing season.

Lowcountry Voices is a multicultural and ethnically diverse choir, performing standard choral repertoire with special emphasis on African-American musical traditions. Formed in 2012 by Music Director, Nathan L. Nelson, and Sandra Barnhardt, Assistant Director, the new choral group was quickly embraced by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department.

“This promises to be our most exciting and rewarding season yet!”, states Music Director, Nathan L. Nelson. “ We are most proud of what Lowcountry Voices had done in its short performance career, and welcome committed and devoted singers to audition to become a part of this wonderful group of outstanding singers!”

Lowcountry Voices is seeking new members for the upcoming 2014-2015 season. AUDITIONS will be held on Monday, August 18th and 25th from 5:30PM-7:30PM on the second floor of Sterett Hall located on the former Navy Base in North Charleston. There is a need for altos and basses, but all voices are welcomed to come and audition.

Singers will be asked to perform a variety of vocal exercises to determine vocal range and tone as well as the ability to replicate a musical phrase. In addition, the applicants will be asked to perform a short piece of their own choosing. The audition may include the singer performing with a small group to assess vocal blend. Ability to read music is not required, but certainly is a plus.
