The Charleston Lifestyle: Art Mecca & Social Night at Republic
7/11/2014 1:30:25 PM

Love & Laughter Tour: Rickey Smiley sure knows how to entertain! He brought the laughter and Charlie Wilson kept the love in full supply. Rickey started the evening with his trademark humor which includes skits from his popular morning radio show. Charlie Wilson performed like a man half his age. I’d heard from several people that a Charlie Wilson concert is an experience. I was not disappointed. Dressed in all white, he began his set with a little praise break; after which he cranked up the funk! Uncle Charlie wasn’t alone. He was accompanied by a full band and beautiful dancers. It was refreshing to see mature and sexy back-up performers; the ladies aided in creating that old school/new school feel.

Doris Colbert Kennedy at Art Mecca: The beautiful and talented, Doris Colbert Kennedy is currently featured at Art Mecca (427 King Street). The opening reception was a week ago but you can still visit the store and purchase her work. She classifies her paintings as “magical and forever”. Those words are perfect was to describe such whimsical yet powerful pieces of art. Doris doesn’t shy away from color or broad brush strokes in her work which adds depth and emotion to her art. Aside from being a phenomenal artist, Ms. Kennedy has traveled the world and possesses a wealth of knowledge and wisdom.

Dwayne Green’s Social at Republic Reign: Charleston community leaders gathered at Republic Reign Garden & Lounge for sushi, punch and intelligent conservation on June 26th. The topic of discussion; the newly proposed 12am bar closing. The event was attended by the long standing local political figures as well as others who are in opposition of the new ordinance. I had the pleasure of meeting John Tecklenburg. He hopes to be the new mayor of our fair city. I never pass up on an invitation from Dwayne Green and am looking forward to his July event.
