Registration Opens for 15th Annual Race for the ARK

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - Registration is open for the 15th annual Thrivent Financial Race for the ARKThe race is set for Saturday, Aug. 23 in Summerville. The ARK provides comprehensive support services to families living with Alzheimer's or related dementia. 


The race includes a 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun run - both races begin and end at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 206 Central Ave. in Summerville. The USATF-certified course winds through historic downtown Summerville. The 5K begins at 7:45 a.m. and the 1-mile fun run kicks off at 8:45 a.m.


This year's presenting sponsor is Sherry Sheppard and Thrivent Financial. Other sponsors include periodontist Dr. Kelly Ford, Steinberg Law Firm, Trident Senior Health, Lutheran Homes and Charleston Senior Directory. Those interested in sponsoring or volunteering should contact Cheryl Moniz at .


Through Aug. 21, registration costs are $30 with T-shirt for the 5K run/walk and $25 for without T-shirt. Registration is $25 for the 1-mile fun run. This year's T-shirts will be quick-dry fabric and will feature a special 15th annual graphic.


Businesses can create five-person teams as part of the Corporate Challenge. The winning team (combined best times) receives a hand-crafted traveling trophy to display at its business or organization for one year. Cost is $350.


Youth and high school sports teams are invited to participate in the Lowcountry Youth Team Challenge. Contact Cheryl Moniz at  to sign up.


Pre-registration and packet pickup is noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 22 St. Luke's Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 206 Central Ave. in Summerville. Race day registration and packet pickup will be 6:30-7:30 a.m. Aug. 23. Register for the race online at


Since 2000, about 500 runners and walkers from the Lowcountry and well beyond gather to support The ARK, Alzheimer's Family Support Services. The 2013 Race for the ARK raised more than $24,000 to support families living with Alzheimer's or related dementia in the Lowcountry, through the services The ARK provides.
